Frequently Asked Questions About Car Insurance In Canada
What is a deductable?
- Deductible is the dollar amount on each claim you make, that you are required to pay before your insurance kicks-in. Deductible is usually an amount between $300-$1000, however you might be able to find an insurance without deductible, but it will cost you more. Deductible applies only if you have comprehensive coverage. If you only have coverage for liabilities, deductible do not apply, because you are not insuring your own car in case of an accident where you are found to be at fault.
Age of driving in Canada
- The age of driving in Canada is determined on a province-by-province basis, but it is generally 16 years of age for a G1 license (Learner's permit), with the exception of Alberta, where it is 14 years of age.
Driving with G1 alone
- You can't drive alone with a G1 license (Learner's permit) in Canada. Holders of a G1 permit must be accompanied by a non-probationary licensed driver sitting on the front passenger seat. And again, the age of the accompanying driver varies from province to province. For example the accompanying driver must have been fully licensed for at least 4 years in Ontario, and in Manitoba this requirement is 3 years.
Changing ownership of a car
- Before changing the ownership of a car in your local MTU, the car must have passed the safety and emission tests and be insured. After insuring your new vehicle, you still can't drive it until you change the ownership and purchase the license plates from the MTU. Even if you already have license plates, you should still not drive with them until you change the ownership. The process of changing the ownership is very fast and easy, however, make sure that the seller did not make any mistakes when filling up the ownership paper. In case that there are mistakes on the ownership paper, ask the seller to write the information on a separate piece of paper and sign it.
Can I ensure a car in Canada for a month or a few months?
- While most companies offer insurances for a year or at least 6 months, it is not impossible to insure a car for only a few month. However, you should call an insurance company and ask them. I have had colleagues from Australia, who bought a car in Canada and insured it for 3 months while they were here.
If someone steals personal items from my car, will these items be covered by my car insurance?
- Generally your personal items are not covered by your car insurance, however if you have purchased home insurance together with your car insurance, there is a good chance that your personal possessions are covered by your home insurance.
What is the difference in insurance if my car is financed?
- Since the car is owned by the financial institution, they will require you to purchase comprehensive coverage to make sure that their property is fully covered. However, if you own the car you can choose to have only liability coverage.
Who is covered on my auto insurance?
- Any driver who has your permission to drive your car and a valid driving license can be covered by your auto insurance. Keep in mind however, that by lending your car you are also lending your car insurance. That means if a friend has an at-fault accident while driving your car, the insurance company will treat it as though you were driving the car.
